Sermonette: New Year Resolution – Kill Sin

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” Romans 12:1 esv

Today many Christians across the globe will be planning their new year’s resolutions for the year. Whether it is a diet, a reading plan, or breaking a bad habit time has taught us that we usually don’t follow through with our objectives. For many of us, we have tried and tried but only failed to allow anything good to stick. It was easy to pick up the bad habits and slothful nature. Change is too hard and must be meticulously maintained.

Perhaps this year you should make a resolution to make the most important change in your Christian life: to once and for all kill sin. Like any proposition, this one won’t be easy and it’s going to take continual effort, but unlike spiritless resolutions this one is empowered by the work of the Spirit.

Most people are unwilling to commit to the painful process of truly eliminating sin. Few will bear the heat of the refiners fire without giving up, settling down, or turning back. But be assured brother and sister that the grass really is greener on the other side.

It would truly be easier to eliminate sin if we could kill this flesh, but God calls us to ____ as a living sacrifice. The problem with a living sacrifice is that they have a tendency to crawl off the alter. To start attacking the sin nature one must wake up every morning with a resolve to put self to death, take up the cross, and live the saintly life.

Whether you are one to make resolutions or not, don’t forgo this opportunity to eliminate sin and find freedom in the Spirit. May God provide you with a fruitful year of killing sin.
